Posthumous Degree or Certificate

In special circumstances, a degree or certificate may be awarded posthumously to a student who passes away while actively pursuing their academic program. To be eligible, the student must have:

  • Been officially declared as degree-seeking with a declared major and an approved plan of study on file.
  • Been within one semester (typically no more than 18 credit hours for undergraduate programs) of completing all graduation requirements at the time of death.

Approval for awarding a posthumous degree or certificate must be obtained from the appropriate academic department, the Registrar, and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
In exceptional cases that do not meet all outlined criteria, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, in consultation with relevant academic leadership, may exercise discretion to determine eligibility for a degree or certificate.
