It took just three sets for the Colby Community College Lady Trojans volleyball team to top the Butler Community College Grizzlies in the first round of the Region VI playoffs Tuesday at the Colby Community Building, 25-7, 25-16 and 25-22.

Entering the night Colby had dropped four of the last five regular season contests, but quickly found their game by bolting out in front 11-1 in the first set. Butler held brief leads in sets two and three, but CCC’s consistency withheld the charges.

The Lady Trojans had 49 kills, including 19 from sophomore Aleksandra Malek and nine from sophomore Taylor Barrett. Two-time defensive conference player of the week Maja Jankovic had 16 digs and freshman Taylor West contributed 14.

“We are so proud of our team for fighting through some adversity and accomplishing many of our preseason goals," said head coach Carey Jones. "Last night was truly a team effort, which is exactly what it's going to take to reach our goal of making it to the national tournament."

With the win the Lady Trojans, the third seed, advance to the region semifinal Sunday for a 4 p.m. game at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Their opponent will be the winner of tonight’s contest when No. 6 seed Dodge City plays No. 2 Seward County in Liberal.

Colby won both regular season games against Dodge City and split with Seward.
