Susan McMahan, planning section chief for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM), will be the first speaker at the 2018-19 Dr. Max Pickerill Lecture Series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The presentation will be in Frahm Theatre on the CCC campus.

McMahan is a subject matter expert for the State of Kansas on emergency continuity of operations planning, and a KDEM instructor for the Fundamentals of Emergency Management certification course. She is the former director of emergency management for Thomas County.

She earned an associate degree from Colby Community College and a bachelor’s in management from the University of Phoenix. She is a certified Kansas Emergency Manager and holds several other certifications. She is also the author of “Let Go, Let God, Be Held.”

Her September 18 talk will explore the relationship between emergency management and self-management, mental preparation for personal and professional life, and what it means to be motivated. She will also share thoughts on her deployment to Hawaii assisting with response and recovery efforts after the recent volcano and hurricane damage.
