HIGH SCHOOL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM
The Kansas Challenge to Secondary School Pupils Act (K.S.A. 72-11a01 through 72-11a05,
and
amendments thereto) provides a means for school districts, in cooperation with institutions
of
postsecondary education, to provide "new and exciting challenges to secondary school
pupils" (K.S.A.
72-11a02). This act provides the opportunity for a 10th, 11th and 12th grade student
who has
"demonstrated the ability to benefit from participation in the regular curricula of
eligible postsecondary
education institutions and has been authorized by the principal of the school to apply
for enrollment at an
eligible postsecondary institution, and is acceptable or has been accepted for enrollment
at an eligible
postsecondary education institution" (K.S.A. 72-11a03) to enroll concurrently in both
the secondary and
postsecondary education institutions. A cooperative agreement between the school district
and the
postsecondary education institution will specify the academic credit to be granted,
that the credit will be
applicable toward a certificate or degree at the institution "and may qualify as both
high school and
college credits," and what the pupil shall pay in tuition and fees for the course
(K.S.A. 72-11a04). Under
Excel in CTE (formerly Senate Bill 155), students taking applicable technical tiered
courses will not be
required to pay tuition. Cost for the tuition will be funded through allocation from
the state of Kansas.
Students qualifying under Excel in CTE for tuition assistance remain responsible for
covering all
applicable fees and books. [Revised April 2014; Jan. 2021]
Colby Community College provides a service to area high schools to enroll sophomores,
juniors and
seniors in one (1) or more college credit courses at the local school. At the invitation
of the local high
school, Colby Community College will provide college courses during the regular day
schedule. These
courses will be exclusively for college credit although they may be taken in lieu
of high school courses to
complete graduation requirements at the discretion of the local school. The course
will meet the same
standards as similar courses taught at the Colby Community College campus. The course
syllabus,
textbooks, and other instructional materials will be the same as those for our campus
courses.
By state law, high school students must have written permission of their high school
principals before
enrolling. [see appendix]
OUTREACH PROGRAM
The Outreach Program was established to deliver programs and courses to communities
within the service
area of the college. Designed as a service to residents of northwest Kansas, the Outreach
Program fulfills
many educational needs of the communities.
