Three horsemanship camps hosted by Colby Community College are scheduled the last week of May. The first is an overnight camp for riders with previous riding experience and a knowledge of basic riding skills.  The camp will begin on Sunday, May 24, with registration and horse check-in at 3 p.m. at the CCC Agricultural Center located four miles east and one mile north of Colby.  The camp will include riding instruction, lectures on topics such as safety, grooming, nutrition, horse behavior, demonstrations and fun events.  Additional activities are designed to expose campers to other areas of the equine industry and help participants get to know one another.  On the final morning campers will demonstrate their skills before departing at 11 a.m. to return home.  This overnight horsemanship camp is for ages 11-17.  Both English and Western disciplines are available during each camp session.  Participants will stay in the College residence hall.

A Beginner Day Camp will be held May 28.  This camp is for beginning riders with limited experience.  The day will begin with registration and horse check-in at 8:30 a.m. at the Agricultural Center.  Lunch will be provided with the camp concluding at 4 p.m.

The final camp is the Young Showman Day Camp on May 29.  Participants must have two years of previous show experience.  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Agricultural Center.  Lunch will be provided with the camp concluding at 4 p.m.

“The Horsemanship Camps are designed to be both an educational and fun experience for youth,” said Equestrian Team Coach Shanda Mattix.  “Youth ages 5-10 are allowed to participate as day campers only.  The overnight horsemanship camp is for ages 11-17.  Campers are supervised by CCC Equestrian Coaches and team members.  Transportation between the main campus and the Horse Unit is provided by counselors/coaches in college vans.”

Participants are encouraged to bring their horses for use during camp.  A very limited number of CCC-owned horses will be available for lease at an additional cost.  Campers who are bringing their own horses are required to provide a health certificate, valid negative Coggins certificate, proof of current 4-way/5-way vaccination and proof of current West Nile vaccination.  Campers who bring their own horses are required to provide hay, grain and other supplies.

Cost is $300 for the overnight camp for those who bring a horse; $350 overnight with leased horse; $75 day camp with own horse; and $85 day camp with leased horse.

The price includes tuition, housing, activities and all meals beginning with dinner on the first day and ending with breakfast on the last.
