March 12: INITIAL MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DR. SETH CARTER

The amount of information concerning COVID-19 has been somewhat ambiguous and guidance has been limited.  Currently, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) we know the number of confirmed cases in the United States has surpassed 1,000; however, the number of unconfirmed cases could be much higher.  The symptoms appear to mirror that of the flu (i.e., “patients with confirmed COVID-19 have had mild-to-severe respiratory illness. Symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure” (Yale NewHaven Health).

CCC will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available.  The guidance we have received from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment is to avoid travel to areas that have large reported cases of the virus, avoid large gatherings, and continue sanitary practices.

It is important to continue sanitary/hygienic processes (wash hands regularly and often, avoid shaking hands, and regularly disinfecting work areas) and ensure that everyone is monitoring their health and keeping themselves informed.  If you exhibit these symptoms or have been exposed, please do not come to class and call Citizen Health Center (or your preferred health care provider) and receive additional guidance.

As of right now, Colby Community College is expected to resume classes as normal upon the conclusion of Spring Break.  However, please take any necessary items with you prior to leaving campus, in case something does change.  Again, we are closely monitoring the situation and listening to state health officials.

What is CCC Doing?

  • Attending weekly meetings with Citizens Health
  • Receiving daily updates regarding the virus from a variety of sources (hospital, peer networks, government resources, the state of Kansas, researching a variety of sources, etc.)
  • Exploring options/feasibility to move classes online, if necessary

We will be posting updates on our website as they become available.

Take care.

Seth Macon Carter, Ed.D.
President
