The Colby Community College Women’s Basketball Team signed seven players during the first week of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) signing period. By the close of business on April 24, Colby signed four quality Kansas prep standouts and three high level out-of-state recruits.  Laura Dennis, Audra Nowak, Samoun Moore, Jetta Smith, Janassa Swaney, Katie Withington and Kylie Minish are all new members of the Colby Community College women’s basketball program.

“Last recruiting season we got a late start and it showed on the floor,” said Head Coach Antowin Edwards.  “However, I believe that we did a good job of visiting every school and attending as many games in central and northwest Kansas as possible.  I also believe we landed some quality out-of-state kids.   As a staff we did a great job of getting Colby women’s basketball out in front of the coaches, parents and players.  As a result of that, our recruiting base has increased and our talent level has improved tremendously.  We are making strides in the right direction but there is still plenty of work to do to improve as a program.”

Laura Dennis is a 5’11” shooting guard from Oakley.  Dennis is recognized as one of the best players in northwest Kansas. A 2014 2A All-State selection, she led her team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 20 points per game (ppg) and 13 rebounds per game (rpg).

“Laura was recruited by almost everyone in the league,” said Edwards “She has good size and athleticism at the guard spot and she is an excellent three-point shooter.  This was a big pickup for us and I expect her to make an immediate impact on the offensive end of the floor.”

Audra Nowak, a 5’10” wing, is from Victoria.  According to Coach Edwards, Nowak is one of the best kept secrets in central Kansas. A 2014 1A (Division II) All-State selection, she was second on the team in scoring and led the team in rebounding--averaging 14 ppg and 5 rpg.

“Audra was a surprise pickup for us.  She flew under the radar most of the season and we are lucky to have landed her.   She has good size at the guard spot and she has a deadly mid-range game.  She shot 51 percent as a senior.  I expect her to make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor,” said Edwards.

Samoun Moore, 5’10 wing from Aurora, Colo., had an outstanding senior campaign. A 2014 1st Team All-Denver Prep selection, she led her team in scoring and rebounding averaging 13 ppg and 11 rpg.

“Samoun has good size and athleticism at the guard spot,” Edwards said. “She can play all three guard positions and she can also stretch the floor with her three-point shooting.  She gives us that added size and toughness on the perimeter that we lacked last season”

Jetta Smith is a 6’1 center from Oklahoma City, Okla.  Smith had an outstanding senior campaign--anchoring the defense of a team that finished 26-6.   This season she nearly averaged a double-double.  She finished the season averaging 10 ppg and 8 rpg.

“Jetta gives us that D1 size and strength to be successful in the league.   She comes from a program that has improved over the years and she understands Colby’s history.  She was a key component in the development and improvement of her high school program.  She understands that it is going to take a lot of hard work to get this program turned around and she wants to be a part of future growth and success,” Edwards said.

Janassa Swaney, 5’10 forward from Stockton, is another one of those hardworking, glue players that every team searches for.  She was second on the team in scoring and third on the team in rebounding--averaging 7 ppg and 5 rpg.

“Janassa is a solid pickup for us,” said Edwards.  “She too flew under the radar most of the season and we are lucky to have landed her.   She has good size, athleticism, and depth at the forward spot.   She is a solid defender and she will get better offensively as her confidence increases.”

Katie Withington is a 5’4” point guard from Atwood.   Withington had an outstanding senior campaign. A 2014 2nd Team All-Northwest Kansas League selection, she led her team in scoring and was second in team rebounding averaging 14 ppg and 5 rpg.

“Katie has good quickness and a high basketball IQ which will help her be a quality guard at this level.   She has the ability to play both guard positions because she can also shoot the long ball well.   She gives us some much needed fire power from the outside, as well as another quality ball handler on the perimeter,” said Edwards.

Kylie Minish, 5’5 point guard from Castle Rock, Colo., had an outstanding senior campaign as the lead guard on a “Sweet 16” team that finished 18-8.   A 2014 Honorable Continental All-League Team selection, she was one of the team leaders in all statistical categories averaging 7 ppg, 2 assists per game, and 2 steals per game.

“Kylie has good quickness and she is a tenacious on-ball defender.   With her ability to shoot the long ball, she gives us some much needed fire power from the outside, as well as another quality ball handler on the perimeter.  She comes from a winning program and I expect her to bring that winning attitude and work ethic with her,” Edwards said.
