“This is an unbelievable start to the season but we can’t forget that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that matters,” said fifth-year Head Coach James Ortiz.
The men started the weekend the same way it ended--with a new school record. In the Trojans’ first event, sophomore Ashley Riley set a new school record in the Men’s 600 meter run with a time of 1:20.42. The record was previously held by Fabian Hayles which he set the previous weekend at the Jayhawk Classic. Both athletes are currently ranked in the top eight in the nation in the event. The competition ended with Riley, Hayles, Desmond Major and Keenan Williams setting a new 4 x 400 meter relay record of 3:16.69.
Other school records set over the weekend include Raheem Brown, 6.75 in the 60 meter dash; Mike Kinuthia, 1:54.32 in the 800 meter run; Desmond Major, 4313 points in the Heptathlon; and Keenan Williams 21.90 in the 200 meter dash. That record was broken three minutes later by fellow teammate Raheem Brown with a time of 21.69. These performances were national qualifying marks and athletes are ranked top eight nationally in their respective events.
Other national qualifying performances were Robert Monticone (800m, 1000m), Hayles (800m), Kinuthia (1000m), Josh Quiroga (800m, 1000m), Noe Belmares (800m, 1000m), Gabe Johnson (800m), Blair Warr (800m, 1000m), Jermaine Smith (600m), Chris Speaks (5000m), & Omar Trevino (5000m).
The Trojans next competition is the Fred Beile Track Classic hosted by Doane College on February 8.
