The Colby Community College men’s track and field team capped its season by finishing 11th at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Mesa, Ariz. over the weekend.

"I didn’t know what to expect going into this weekend but the team did a great job overcoming adversity all season and they did it again this weekend,” said Head Coach James Ortiz.

The competition began with the Men’s 4x800 meter relay of Mike Kinuthia, Rob Monticone, Josh Quiroga and Fabian Hayles finishing fourth overall and setting a school record time of 7:37.16. Sophomore Gennard Paul advanced to the finals of the Men’s Triple Jump but fell short of scoring, finishing ninth overall with a jump of 14.88 meters (48-10.00).

On day two, Quiroga and Monticone just missed the finals of the Men’s 1500 meter run finishing in 4:04.74 and 4:05.63. The cut-off time to advance to the finals was 4:03.67. Paul went on to finish 11th in the Men's Long Jump with a jump of 7.14 meters (23-05.25). The day concluded with freshman Chris Speaks earning All-American honors in the Men’s 3000 meter Steeplechase, finishing fourth in 9:13.46.

On day three, Kinuthia and Speaks earned All American honors in their respective events. Kinuthia earned national runner-up honors and set a school record time of 3:52.84. Speaks went on to take sixth in the Men’s 5000 meter run with a personal best time of 14:58.13.

"I'm so proud of my team. Not just the six athletes who competed but all 21 on the roster,” Ortiz said.  “Even with a shortage of athletes, CCC went on the finish eleventh in the team standings. South Plains College claimed the men’s team title.”
