Shanda Mattix is the Horse Program Director at Colby Community College and is the coach of the CCC Equestrian Team. Shanda also serves on the Kansas Horse Council Board of Directors, is the Kansas Horse Council Region 1 Director, EquiFest of Kansas Chair, is a state certified horse show judge, and is a 4-H horse volunteer. Shanda is a Master Riding Instructor through the Certified Horsemanship Association. She was raised on a commercial cow-calf operation in Northwest Kansas and grew up showing Quarter horses, barrel racing, and competing in horse judging contests. As a youth she was a member of the 2001 AQHYA Reserve World Champion Horse Judging Team and the 2002 AQHYA World Champion Horse Judging Team. Shanda is an alumni of the Colby Community College Equestrian Team and Kansas State University Women’s Varsity Equestrian Team and the 2005 Kansas State University Horse Judging Team. As a college equestrian, she was a regional qualifier all four years. Shanda and her husband, Caleb Mattix, reside in Colby and continue raising the Draper family’s commercial cattle herd.
Katie Crone attended West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, where she gained her Bachelor’s degree in Equine Business with a minor in Animal Science. Katie now runs Crone Farms Equestrian barn in Lakin, Kansas. Katie was born in Norwich, England and came to Texas in 1995. She became a US citizen in 2011. Katie rode for West Texas A&M in IHSA competitions for four years in both Open Equitation and Open Jumper. She also competed in Western Open Horsemanship and Reining. She was High Point English rider for WTAMU twice, and was high point runner up in the IHSA region twice. Katie competed and placed twice at IHSA Nationals as a WTAMU team member and as an individual in Open Equitation and Open Jumper. Katie started riding when she was eight and has shown extensively in USEF A and AA shows since she was twelve. She has ridden in all classes up to and including Grand Prix. Katie has ridden in clinics with a number of top trainers including Greg Best, Tony Font and Ragan Roberts. She currently trains with Alison Wickes from Salt Lake City, Utah. Katie’s focus is on strong English equitation fundamentals that will enable the team to effectively ride the varied horses that they will encounter on the IHSA circuit. She also encourages a strong academic effort from the team members. Katie Crone is available to give private lessons, show training and clinics.
