Why Nursing?

Nurses play a critical role at every health facility, taking care of patients while providing advice and emotional support. Colby's commitment to nursing education is helping to grow this essential labor pool. There are a variety of careers in the nursing field, and we invite you to learn more about this exciting journey.

The Colby Nursing Program

CCC has a "1 + 1" program. The first-year students take the practical nursing (PN) curriculum, and the second year they complete the associate degree in nursing (ADN). Please utilize the admissions guidelines when applying.

A career in nursing provides a wide variety of job opportunities and job security.  Nurses practice in many settings (hospitals, extended-care facilities, community agencies, clinics, schools) caring for infants, children, adults, or the elderly.  Colby Community College offers a Certificate in Practical Nursing, an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing, and an Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in pre-nursing.  Pre-Nursing courses necessary to work toward a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing are also available.  Whether you are interested in becoming an LPN, RN, or transferring to a four-year RN program, Colby Community College can meet your needs.

Transition courses are available for Paramedics or RRTs with one year of experience who are looking to become a registered nurse. Transition students are required to complete three transition courses in the summer semester prior to the ADN program, which begins in the fall semester. See transition student requirements in the student catalog or under "forms."

Colby Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age in its programs, activities and employment.

The mission of the Department of Nursing is to prepare professional nurses at the practical certificate and associate degree nursing levels by instilling caring, critical thinking, effective nursing judgement, and adaptability in an ever-changing nursing profession.  In accordance with the mission of Colby Community College, challenge students to adapt to a diverse society, create opportunities for student growth, and connect student learning with professional experiences.

In addition, these goals are met through the department's core philosophy

All students accepted into the nursing program must submit to a criminal background check. This is a mandatory requirement for becoming a licensed healthcare provider.

The background check is to be completed by the student not more than 30 days prior to beginning nursing courses each year. The background check is to be completed online. Information on completing the process for background checks will be provided to the student.

All students will have background checks evaluated by the director of the nursing program according to the exclusionary criteria of the clinical facilities and the state licensing boards.

Failure to comply with the criminal background check disqualifies the student from the nursing program.

A violation found in accordance with Kansas Statute 65-1120 does not necessarily disqualify the student from admission to the nursing program.
